Wanderer Weekly #43 – Kathmandu to Banares
It’s week 43 of Stevie Wander’s year-long journey on the Hippie Trail from 50-years ago. Our intrepid hippie wanderer is preparing to leave the ultimate hippie haven destination on the globe—Kathmandu! These are his final days in Nepal. He can’t get his visa extended anymore. His 25 days in Nepal went by so fast. Now the Wanderer is back on the move. He leaves Nepal on a plane to the Indian town of Patna, across the border. In his short stay in Patna he is mistaken for a Saint by one of the local natives. He’s just a dirty hippie, not a Sadhu. Then Stevie Wander hops on a train that takes him to the ancient city of Banares and the Ganges River. He is literally swallowed up in a sea of humanity along the Ghats leading to the Ganges. Stevie also takes a side trip a few miles from the Ganges River to Sarnath and Buddha’s Deer Park to celebrate his 23rd birthday. Come hear more of the exciting stories of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure!
Co-author Steve Reifman celebrates the 50th anniversary of the ultimate hippy trail journey. His adventure, the inspiration for the book Wanderer co-written with F.T. Burke, took him across four continents through 26 countries in 1970-1971. Now, on the Golden Anniversary of his adventure, Steve Reifman – or “Stevie Wander,” as he likes to be called – tells the true tales behind the story.
